The organic sector wants to abolish the 9% VAT on organic products, in order to make these products cheaper and therefore more attractive to consumers. They also want the government to launch a major advertising campaign to explain the values ​​and importance of organic farming to consumers, the sector said in a 10-point plan it intends to submit to the minister of Agriculture Carola Schouten next month, reports NOS.

The industry came up with the plan after IRI market research showed that organics only accounted for 3.21% of the more than 40 billion euros spent in supermarkets last year. This is barely more than the 3.19% market share held by organic products in 2018.

“In this way, we will not reach the European target. By 2030, we must have an average market share of 25 percent. Further efforts are desperately needed,” Michael Wilde, director of the professional association Bionext. “For a healthy, equitable and sustainable agricultural system, we need a strong policy, focusing on both consumption and production. We therefore call on politicians to set up a sort of working group with us.

Part of that policy has to be an information campaign, Wilde said. In other countries such as Germany, Switzerland and Austria, major government campaigns are explaining the importance of organic food. Consumers there have much more knowledge about organic foods. It is high time that this happened here too, ”he said.
