The Association of Organic Agriculture Practitioners of Nigeria, Ebonyi Chapter, called on stakeholders to promote the organic farming system for better health and environmental benefits in the state.

Mr. Ezekiel Igboji, State Coordinator of the association made the call on Tuesday, in an interview with the Nigerian News Agency (NAN) in Abakaliki.

Igboji noted that awareness of organic farming is low and in its infancy in the state, saying its practice could save lives and the environment, if integrity and standards are applied.

He described organic as food produced using methods that conform to organic farming standards, noting that the term organic was only used when it came to certification of a product.

The coordinator said the association will partner with the media and the Export Promotion Board to promote the practice in the state, revealing that it plans to train extension officers from the Ministry of Agriculture and associations in the state. farmers on the principles, practices and entrepreneurship of organic farming.

Training and practice were export criteria once a product went through processes and was certified, Igboji said.

“Farmers’ groups, cooperatives, through the State’s agricultural development program at the rural level will be sensitized. Many claim to be organic farmers but do not follow organic standards.

“Integrity is a challenge in ordinary businesses and we want to bridge the gap,” he said.
