At first glance, landing your next dream job should be easy – write a great resume or CV, send it out and post online, and start fielding phone calls and emails for job interviews. However, many people consider the resume writing process to be one of the most challenging aspects of a job search.
What association(s) do you belong to? This is important for the obvious reasons. Belonging to a professional association keeps you up-to-date on so many things including CV strategy, client focus, new trends, industry updates and much more. In my opinion, I couldn’t imagine NOT being in them. They are a wealth of knowledge! I get to interact with other writers/business owners/career coaches, share information, pose questions and more. My favorite organizations are CDI (Career Directors International) and PARW (Professional Association of Resume Writers), but there are several others that are good, too: National Association of Resume Writers (NRWA), Career Management Alliance (CMA), and Association of Online Resume & Career Professionals (AORCP).
Dates are not important. Providing accurate dates of employment is critical. Most employers will perform a thorough background check to verify these dates, and a discrepancy can end your candidacy immediately. Education and graduation dates are also important – if you leave this date off, it is interpreted as hiding your age and is a great way to get your resume passed over.
Once you’ve developed your upsell, contact all the websites that you initially looked to as competitors and offer them marketing material to help them make more money. You’ll be amazed at how quickly they jump on.
The friend helping me prepare my resume wanted to know about stories I’d written. I told him about an article that had caught the attention of the school’s president, who wrote a letter to the editor saying it was an excellent example of great student journalism.
You might use a company logo if you’ve worked at prominent place. Another option is the symbol for your college. These graphics help your resume look different from most others while also forming a connection between you and popular brands.
Your hourly rate is not as important if you are doing this for fun and profit. If you are writing articles you enjoy, the money is a bonus rather than the main reason for the work. You may also be writing to experience and confidence in your skills. Freelance writing is a wonderful way to improve your writing skills and build your resume. Writing as a hobby can be therapeutic and earning a little extra makes it even better.
There are many more things that we can point to but, like a said, there are so many details that go into winning or not. I hope you find these few examples worth applying.
